CLASS PREP
- Complete the survey posted on Blackboard (see BB folder ‘Consumer Wisdom’). Determine your score for each block of questions, and your total score. Bring this to class (I will hand out paper copies in class on the 14th, or you can print the one on BB). Some of these questions are harder for college students to respond to since you are not yet working full time, managing budgets etc. So, when needed, imagine that it is 5 years from now and rate how you think you would respond then (not how you WISH you will respond, but honestly what you think will best reflect your actual behavior).
- Read my article about Consumer Wisdom (see BB folder ‘Consumer Wisdom’). You can start on p. 4 (Methodology) and read through p. 20 (up to the start of the General Discussion). Focus on understanding the five facets of Consumer Wisdom as described in the article (and as summarized in Table 2, on pp. 7-8).
- Submit a blog in response to the following two questions:
- What product or service categories do you think that the “wise consumer” is most likely to spend money on? In other words, what sorts of things are they likely to spend money on – when they decide that it is worth spending money at all? Try to build on (i.e., go beyond) the examples that are highlighted in the article.
- Next, what are some design principles that would serve the “wise consumer”? A design principle is a design goal or objective, such as “make products easy to use” or “include the most advanced features.” In other words, assuming that they buy products and services in the categories you identify per the question above, what attributes or features will be important and/or appealing to them? You’ll have to go beyond the article to answer this, so make sure you spend some time thinking about it before you write your blog!
